Research-reading sprint — Homework

Practice both strategies using any nonfiction book or article you have at home.

  1. 1.Skim the title and headings, or first sentences of paragraphs if there are no headings. In one sentence, what do you predict this text is about?
  2. 2.Time yourself: how many seconds did it take to scan the page and find one specific number or name? Pick one before you start.
  3. 3.What specific fact did you find by scanning?
  4. 4.Now read that same section slowly and carefully. What did you understand that skimming and scanning missed?
  5. 5.Describe one real-life situation, not schoolwork, where scanning quickly would be more useful than reading every word.
