Quote vs paraphrase — Homework

For each sentence, write both a direct quote (with quotation marks, as if citing it) and a paraphrase (fully in your own words).

  1. 1.Original: "The human heart beats about 100,000 times a day." Write it as a properly punctuated direct quote.
  2. 2.Now paraphrase that same sentence in your own words.
  3. 3.Original: "Glaciers store about 69 percent of the fresh water on Earth." Paraphrase it.
  4. 4.True or false: a paraphrase still needs to credit where the idea came from.
  5. 5.Why might a writer choose to paraphrase MOST of their research but quote just one or two powerful lines directly?
