Year-end capstone: mixed mastery

Demonstrate mixed mastery of the year's major fifth-grade skills -- decimals, fractions, volume, coordinate plane, and order of operations -- in one capstone problem set.

This is the last stop of fifth-grade math: a mix of everything from the whole year, decimals through volume through order of operations, in one final capstone.

Look back at how far this year has gone -- from shifting digits by 10 in week 1 to multi-part performance tasks -- the same careful habits (read carefully, work step by step, check your answer) carried through every single week.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this as a celebration lap, not a brand-new topic -- everything here has already been taught and practiced this year.
  • Let them choose the order to tackle the mixed problems in, building confidence by starting wherever feels strongest.
  • Ask them to name, out loud, which unit each problem came from -- that recognition itself shows mastery.
  • Reflect together on growth since the start of the year: what felt hard back then that feels automatic now?
Talk about it:
  • Which skill from this whole year do you feel most confident about now?
  • Which skill still needs a little more practice heading into next year?
  • What is one math habit, like estimating first or labeling steps, you plan to keep using?

Mastery looks like: They can accurately solve a mixed capstone problem set drawing on decimals, fractions, volume, coordinate graphing, and order of operations, with clear step-by-step work.

Common stumbles: Rushing without identifying which skill a problem needs; abandoning the step-by-step habit built all year under end-of-year fatigue.
