CAST-style science-math items

Apply fifth-grade math skills -- decimals, volume, order of operations, and patterns -- to science-context data problems, in the style of integrated CAST items.

Science often needs math to make sense of data: measuring liquid in milliliters, finding the volume of a container, or reading values off a graph. CAST-style items wrap a science situation around a math question.

The math tools are the same ones you already know -- the new part is picking the right tool out of a science word problem and watching for science units, like mL, cm, or grams, instead of familiar ones.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Underline the science units -- mL, cm, degrees, grams -- alongside the numbers; the math is identical, but mislabeling units is an easy science-test mistake.
  • Identify the hidden math skill first -- is this a volume question, a fraction-of-a-number question, or a pattern question -- before computing.
  • Use simple, familiar science contexts, like a fish tank, a plant, or a beaker, so the words feel approachable, not intimidating.
  • Remind them that CAST blends subjects on purpose -- strong math skills directly help science scores too.
Talk about it:
  • What science units showed up in these problems, and why do they matter?
  • How do you find the hidden math skill inside a science word problem?
  • Why might strong math skills help you on a science test?

Mastery looks like: They can identify and apply the correct math skill -- volume, decimal, fraction, or pattern -- inside a science-context word problem, with correct units.

Common stumbles: Ignoring or dropping the science unit in the final answer; picking the wrong math tool because the science context feels unfamiliar.
