Estimate with benchmark fractions

Estimate sums and differences of fractions using benchmark fractions -- 0, 1/2, and 1 -- to judge reasonableness.

Before finding an exact answer, you can estimate a fraction sum or difference by comparing each fraction to the closest benchmark: 0, 1/2, or 1.

Estimating first gives you a reasonableness check -- if your exact answer is wildly different from your estimate, you likely made a mistake somewhere along the way.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Draw a simple 0 -- 1/2 -- 1 line and have them place each fraction near whichever benchmark it is closest to before computing anything exactly.
  • Emphasize this is a reasonableness check, not a replacement for the exact answer -- both skills matter together.
  • Practice classifying fractions quickly: is the numerator close to half the denominator (near 1/2), much smaller (near 0), or nearly equal (near 1)?
  • Revisit a recent homework mistake and show how a benchmark estimate would have caught it right away.
Talk about it:
  • How do you decide if a fraction is closer to 0, 1/2, or 1?
  • Why is estimating before solving exactly a useful habit?
  • Can you think of a time an estimate would have caught a mistake?

Mastery looks like: They can quickly classify fractions near 0, 1/2, or 1 and use that to estimate a sum or difference before computing exactly.

Common stumbles: Assuming every fraction with a big denominator is automatically close to 0; skipping the estimate step entirely.
