Share Circle: Reading Your Story Aloud

Read the published narrative aloud to an audience, give specific positive feedback to others, and reflect on growth across the narrative unit.

A share circle is a chance for writers to read their finished work aloud and hear from real listeners. Good listeners give SPECIFIC praise -- not just "I liked it," but "I liked how you used the word 'shrieked' because I could really hear your sister."

This week closes out your narrative unit. You will read your story aloud, listen to feedback, and think back on everything you learned, from the very first seed story list to this final, published piece.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Model specific praise yourself first, naming an exact word or line from your child's piece rather than a general compliment.
  • If other family members are the audience, coach them ahead of time toward "I liked how..." plus a specific reason.
  • Let your child read their own piece aloud rather than reading it for them -- hearing their own words in their own voice closes the loop on this unit.
  • Look back together at the week 1 seed list and the week 3 first draft to make growth across the unit visible and concrete.
Talk about it:
  • What specific praise did you receive, and how did it feel to hear it?
  • Looking back at your seed list from week 1, how far did your writing come?
  • What is one narrative-writing skill you want to keep using in future pieces?

Mastery looks like: They read their finished piece aloud with confidence and give another writer specific, detail-based praise.

Common stumbles: Giving or accepting only vague praise ("it was good") instead of naming a specific word, detail, or choice.
