Publishing Day: Your Finished Small-Moment Story

Produce a final, published copy of the small-moment narrative, complete with a title and a full self-check against the unit's writing checklist.

Publishing means making your very best, final copy -- the version ready for someone else to read, typed or copied out neatly by hand. Before you publish, give your piece a TITLE that hints at the moment without giving everything away, like "The Wave That Flipped Everything" instead of just "My Kayak Story."

This week you run your whole piece through every checklist item from this unit one more time: a zoomed-in moment, sensory details, correctly punctuated dialogue, vivid verbs, and clear paragraphs. Then you publish.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Read the whole checklist aloud together, one item at a time, checking the actual draft against each one rather than assuming it is done.
  • Let your child choose between typing the final piece or copying it out by hand in their neatest handwriting -- either counts as "published."
  • Brainstorm three or four possible titles before settling on one -- options make the final choice feel deliberate.
  • Treat this like a real milestone: this is the first fully finished, multi-draft piece of the year.
Talk about it:
  • What makes your title specific instead of generic?
  • Which checklist item took the most work to finally meet?
  • How does your published piece compare to your very first draft from week 3?

Mastery looks like: They produce a final, checklist-verified, titled copy of their small-moment narrative, typed or neatly copied.

Common stumbles: Calling a piece "published" without actually re-checking it against every checklist item first.
