Literature Circle #1

Participate in a structured literature circle discussion of a shared novel, using an assigned role to guide the conversation.

This unit's shared novel is Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, the story of a pig named Wilbur who is saved from an early end on the farm by Fern, a young girl who raises him, and later by Charlotte, a clever spider who becomes his best friend and finds an astonishing way to save his life for good.

A literature circle is a small-group discussion where everyone prepares a different job before meeting. A Discussion Leader writes big, open questions. A Word Detective finds and defines a few interesting or tricky words. A Passage Picker chooses a meaningful passage to read aloud and discuss. A Connector links the story to real life, another book, or the wider world. Everyone prepares their role, then the group discusses together.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Take turns rotating roles each time your family discusses a chapter, so everyone practices all four jobs across the unit.
  • Resist answering the Discussion Leader's question yourself right away -- let your child sit with it and answer first.
  • Read the assigned chapters aloud together before the discussion whenever you can; firsthand reading works far better than a summary.
  • Keep the tone like a book club, not a quiz -- there is no single right answer to most literature circle questions.
Talk about it:
  • Which literature circle role sounds the most fun to you? Which sounds the hardest?
  • What is one thing about Wilbur or Charlotte that has surprised you so far?
  • Why do you think E.B. White chose a spider, of all animals, to be the one who saves Wilbur?

Mastery looks like: They can prepare and contribute their assigned literature circle role thoughtfully in a discussion of the shared novel.

Common stumbles: Preparing a role job but not actually using it to drive the discussion; picking a Passage Picker moment with nothing to discuss.
