Checkpoint: Merged Two-Source Notes

Independently take notes from two new nonfiction sources and combine them into one clear, accurate account of a topic.

This is the unit's checkpoint -- no new skill, just a chance to show off the whole research-reading toolbox (skim, take notes, and combine two sources) on a topic you have not seen yet.

Source A: "The California poppy has been the state flower since 1903. Its bright orange petals close up at night and on cloudy days, and open again in bright sunshine, which is why the flower is sometimes called the cup of gold." Source B: "California poppies are remarkably tough. They grow well in poor, dry soil where many other flowers cannot survive, and once established, a patch of wild poppies can come back on its own year after year without anyone planting new seeds."

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child complete this checkpoint with minimal help -- this is the moment to see the whole unit's skills working together independently.
  • If the combined account reads choppy, ask "how could you connect these two ideas with one linking word, like 'and' or 'since'?"
  • Check that both sources' key facts made it into the final combined account -- nothing important should be dropped.
  • Mark this as a real milestone: this is the exact skill behind every research report for the rest of school.
Talk about it:
  • Which part of the research process, skim, note, or combine, has become the most automatic for you this unit?
  • What is one more fact you would want to find out about the California poppy?
  • Looking back across this whole unit, what is the most useful research skill you learned?

Mastery looks like: They can independently take notes from two new nonfiction sources and combine them into one clear, accurate account of a topic.

Common stumbles: Dropping an important fact from one of the two sources; writing two separate summaries side by side instead of one truly combined account.
