Write With the Devices You Found

Write an original paragraph that intentionally uses at least three different figurative language devices from the unit.

This unit built a whole toolbox: simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, hyperbole, and imagery. Real writers do not use these devices randomly -- they choose the ones that best fit the feeling they want to create.

This week, write a paragraph of five to eight sentences describing a real or imagined place, using at least three different devices from the unit on purpose, and be ready to point out which device is which.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Have your child underline or label each device in their own paragraph once it is written, to check the mix is intentional.
  • Encourage revising a plain sentence ("it was a nice day") into one using a device, rather than writing devices from scratch.
  • Read their paragraph aloud together and ask which sentence creates the strongest picture, and why.
  • Resist over-stuffing every single sentence with a device -- even professional writers leave some sentences plain so the decorated ones stand out.
Talk about it:
  • Which device did you enjoy using the most in your paragraph?
  • Was it harder to invent the devices or to decide which ones to use where?
  • If you added a fourth device to your paragraph, which would you add and where?

Mastery looks like: They can write an original paragraph that intentionally uses at least three different figurative language devices from the unit.

Common stumbles: Using only one device repeated throughout instead of a deliberate mix; forcing a device in where a plain sentence would actually work better.
