Year-end: fraction-decimal mastery

Demonstrate fraction and decimal fluency and solve a multi-step performance task combining the year major skills.

Last week of the year! Show fluency across equivalence, comparison, adding and subtracting like fractions, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, and converting between fractions and decimals.

Then tackle a performance task, a bigger, real problem that pulls several of these skills together. Plan the steps before computing, and check that the final answer makes sense.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this as a true capstone: mix equivalence, comparison, adding and subtracting like fractions, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, and fraction-decimal conversion.
  • Let the performance task be the highlight; talk through the plan out loud before computing anything.
  • Celebrate the full year of growth, from place value in the first weeks to fractions and decimals now.
  • Note one or two specific skills worth continuing to review before the next school year begins.
Talk about it:
  • Which fraction or decimal skill from this year feels the strongest?
  • Which one still needs practice?
  • How would you explain to a younger student why 3/4 and 0.75 are the same amount?

Mastery looks like: They confidently convert and compare fractions and decimals, perform fraction operations from across the year, and solve a multi-step performance task combining these skills.

Common stumbles: Reverting to old mistakes under the pressure of a mixed review, like adding denominators again; rushing the performance task without planning the steps first.
