Checkpoint: 2-digit x 2-digit, explained

Multiply two 2-digit numbers fluently with any reliable method and explain the steps in words.

This checkpoint is proof of the last several weeks of work: no new skill today, just fluency and clear explanation. Solve each problem with whichever method feels most reliable, area model, partial products, or the standard algorithm.

Getting the right answer is half the goal; being able to explain the steps to someone else is the other half, and it shows the understanding is real, not just memorized.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this as a proof week: no new teaching, just watching them work and explain.
  • Ask them to talk through a problem out loud to a stuffed animal, sibling, or you, not just write the final number.
  • Note any factor-split or carrying error pattern that shows up more than once, and plan a short warm-up for it.
  • Celebrate that they now have a real choice of methods, which is a sign of genuine understanding.
Talk about it:
  • Which method, area model, partial products, or the standard algorithm, do you use now?
  • Can you explain your steps to someone who has never seen this before?
  • Which part of 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication took the longest to feel comfortable?

Mastery looks like: They multiply two 2-digit numbers fluently with any reliable method and clearly explain the steps.

Common stumbles: Getting a correct answer but being unable to explain the reasoning; small arithmetic slips inside an otherwise correct method.
