Multiplication word problems

Solve one- and two-step real-world word problems involving multiplication, labeling each step.

Real problems rarely say "multiply this by that" outright. Words like "each," "per," and "every" are strong hints that equal groups, and multiplication, are involved.

Some problems take two steps: one multiplication plus an addition or subtraction. Plan both steps before computing, label them clearly, and check that your final number makes sense for the story.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Read the whole problem once before computing anything, then underline the numbers and circle the actual question.
  • Teach "each," "per," and "every" as multiplication signal words worth watching for.
  • For two-step problems, require a clear "step 1" and "step 2" label so the plan is visible, not just the final number.
  • Always finish by checking that the final answer makes sense in the context of the story.
Talk about it:
  • What words in a problem hint that you should multiply?
  • Why is it important to label your steps in a two-step problem?
  • How do you check that your final answer makes sense for the story?

Mastery looks like: They solve one- and two-step multiplication word problems, correctly choosing operations and labeling each step.

Common stumbles: Multiplying the wrong two numbers together; forgetting the second step in a two-step problem; leaving an answer without its units or context.
