Fourth Grade · History · week 8

Build a California region project

Plan and build a model, poster, or diorama of one California region showing its landforms, climate, and the Native nation that lived there.

This week you become the geographer and the historian at once. Choose one of California's four regions from week 1, and build a project -- a poster, a diorama, or a labeled drawing -- that shows three things together: the region's landforms, its climate, and one Native nation whose lifeways matched that land, using what you learned in weeks 4 through 6.

A strong project does not just look nice, it teaches. Someone looking at your project should be able to point to it and explain why that nation's homes, food, or boats made sense for that exact region, using real details rather than guesses.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help gather real materials -- paper, clay, natural items from outside -- but let your child make the design choices.
  • Ask "why did you put that there?" for each part of the project; the explanation matters more than the craft skill.
  • Keep the facts checked against weeks 1-7 rather than letting the project drift into guesswork.
  • Give the finished project a real audience -- present it to another family member and explain all three parts out loud.
Talk about it:
  • Why did you choose this region and this nation to match it?
  • What was the trickiest part of matching landforms, climate, and lifeway together?
  • What is one fact from this project you want to remember all year?

Mastery looks like: They complete a project that accurately shows one region's landforms, climate, and a matched Native nation's lifeway, and can explain the match.

Common stumbles: Picking a nation and region that do not actually match; including guesses instead of facts from the last seven weeks.
