Author Celebration and Portfolio Pick

Reflect on a full year of writing growth, choose a favorite piece for a portfolio, and celebrate as a published author.

This is it -- the final week of a whole year of writing! You have written paragraphs, a persuasive essay, an expert report, and a true narrative story, plus practiced typing and dialogue and so much more.

This week you choose ONE piece from the entire year to keep in your writing PORTFOLIO -- a collection that shows how far you have grown as a writer.

Take time to really celebrate. Being an author, someone who finishes real pieces of writing and shares them with real readers, is something to be proud of.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Lay out all four major pieces from this year together and let your child page through the whole year at once before choosing.
  • Ask genuinely curious questions about the choice ("what made you pick that one?") rather than suggesting your own favorite.
  • Make the celebration real -- a special reading time, a certificate, or simply full attention while your child reads their chosen piece aloud.
  • Look ahead together, briefly, to what kind of writing your child is curious to try next.
Talk about it:
  • Which piece did you choose for your portfolio, and why?
  • What is the single biggest way your writing improved this year?
  • What kind of writing are you excited to try next?

Mastery looks like: They reflect honestly on a full year of writing growth, choose a specific portfolio piece with clear reasoning, and read it aloud with pride.

Common stumbles: Choosing a piece just because it was the most recent rather than genuinely reflecting on growth; giving a vague reason for the choice instead of a specific, honest one.
