Forces lab conclusions

Review the unit's investigations of balanced and unbalanced forces, friction, gravity, and magnetism, and write evidence-based conclusions for each.

Scientists do more than run tests, they draw conclusions from their evidence and explain those conclusions clearly to others. A strong conclusion states what happened (the evidence) and explains why it happened (the science idea behind it), not just one or the other.

This week, you look back across every investigation from this unit, forces, friction, gravity, and magnetism, and practice writing a clear, evidence-based conclusion for each one.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look back together at notes, drawings, or memories from weeks 1 through 8 before starting this review.
  • For each investigation, ask two questions in order: "what happened?" then "why did that happen?"
  • Model one full conclusion out loud first, then have the child try the next ones independently.
  • Praise conclusions that connect evidence to a specific force idea (friction, gravity, magnetism, balanced/unbalanced), not just a description of what was seen.
Talk about it:
  • Which investigation from the past few weeks was your favorite?
  • What is one thing you understand about forces now that you did not in week 1?
  • What makes a conclusion stronger than just describing what happened?

Mastery looks like: They can state a claim supported by evidence, with a clear scientific explanation, for at least three of the unit's investigations.

Common stumbles: Describing only what happened without explaining why (missing the force reasoning), or mixing up which force explains which result.
