Free-choice book club

Discuss a self-selected book using structured questions about character, plot, and personal connection.

This week is a book club week: pick any book you are reading, or have just finished, and get ready to talk about it like a real reader, not just answer quiz questions. Good book talk covers the characters, what happened, and how the book connects to your own life or other books.

There is no single required passage this week -- the "text" is whatever book you have chosen. Bring your own story to the conversation.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child lead this conversation -- your job is to ask open, curious questions, not to test them.
  • Follow up on their answers with "why do you think that?" to go one layer deeper.
  • Share your own honest reaction if you have read the book too, modeling real book-club conversation.
  • If your child is between books, use this as a chance to browse together for the next one.
Talk about it:
  • What book are you reading right now, and what do you think of it so far?
  • Who is a character you would want to be friends with from any book you have read?
  • What is a book you would recommend to a friend, and why?

Mastery looks like: They discuss a self-selected book with specific details about character, plot, and a personal or text-to-text connection.

Common stumbles: Giving only one-word answers instead of explaining reasoning; struggling to connect the book to anything beyond a plot summary.
