Third Grade · Reading · week 17

Research mini-quest with features

Combine text features -- headings, table of contents, index, diagrams -- to research a topic and take brief notes.

Real researchers do not read a whole book cover to cover to answer one question -- they use text features to zoom straight to the right information. This week you will use everything you have learned: headings to scan sections, the table of contents or index to jump to the right page, and diagrams to pull out extra facts.

When you find useful information, write it as a short note in your own words, not a full copied sentence. A few strong notes beat one giant paragraph.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick a simple research question together (favorite animal, favorite place) and hunt for it in a real book, using text features instead of reading cover to cover.
  • Model turning a full sentence into a short note -- cross out extra words together.
  • Keep this light and game-like: "mini-quest" means fast and fun, not a long report.
  • Celebrate using the RIGHT text feature for the job, not just finding the answer.
Talk about it:
  • What text features can help you research fast instead of reading a whole book?
  • Why should notes be in your own words instead of copied sentences?
  • What is one topic you would love to research next?

Mastery looks like: They use table of contents, index, and headings together to locate information efficiently and record it as a short note in their own words.

Common stumbles: Reading the whole book start to finish instead of jumping to the right section; copying full sentences instead of writing short notes.
