Building a facts practice system

Start a personal system (flash cards / fact triangles) to move known facts to automatic recall.

You know a lot of facts now: 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s. This week you build a system to make them AUTOMATIC — so fast you do not have to think. Automatic facts free your brain for the harder math coming next.

A fact triangle shows a whole family at once: the two factors in the bottom corners and the product on top. Cover any corner and say the missing number. It practices multiplication and division together.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help them make a small set of cards for ONLY the facts that are still slow — do not re-drill mastered ones.
  • Practice in short bursts (3–5 minutes) several times a day; sprints beat marathons.
  • Keep it upbeat and untimed at first; speed comes after confidence.
  • Track progress simply — move a card to a "got it" pile when it is automatic.
Talk about it:
  • Which facts are already automatic for you?
  • How does a fact triangle show a whole family?
  • What is your plan to practice the slow ones?

Mastery looks like: They can run a fact triangle both ways and name which facts still need practice.

Common stumbles: Re-practicing easy facts to feel good instead of drilling the hard ones; long boring sessions that kill motivation.
