The ×4 facts as double-double

Master ×4 facts by doubling twice.

Four groups is double of double. To find 4 × 7, first double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. Two easy doubles beat memorizing a hard fact.

This works because 4 = 2 × 2. Doubling twice is the same as multiplying by four.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Practice quick doubling first (doubles to 20) so the two-step move is smooth.
  • Write the two doubles as a little chain: 7 → 14 → 28.
  • Connect to arrays: a 4-row array is two 2-row arrays stacked.
  • Point out ×4 answers are always even — a handy check.
Talk about it:
  • What does double-double mean?
  • Why does it give the same answer as ×4?
  • Are ×4 answers ever odd? Why not?

Mastery looks like: They find ×4 facts by doubling twice and know the answers are always even.

Common stumbles: Doubling only once; making an error in the first double that carries through.
