Time to the minute and elapsed time

Tell and write time to the minute and find elapsed time in simple situations.

The clock has two hands: the short hour hand and the long minute hand. The minutes go by fives around the face (there is your ×5 again!), and each little tick is one minute.

Elapsed time is how long something takes — from a start time to an end time. Count forward on the clock, often by the friendly fives and then the ones.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use a real analog clock with movable hands.
  • Connect minute-counting to ×5 skip counting — it is the same skill.
  • For elapsed time, count up on the clock rather than subtracting on paper.
  • Tie it to daily life: how long until dinner, how long was the walk.
Talk about it:
  • How do you read minutes on the clock?
  • How is telling time connected to ×5?
  • How do you find how long something took?

Mastery looks like: They tell time to the minute and find simple elapsed times by counting on.

Common stumbles: Reading the hour hand as if it were minutes; miscounting the fives; ignoring the hour change.
