Whole numbers as fractions

Express whole numbers as fractions (like 3 = 3/1) and recognize fractions equal to 1.

Whole numbers are fractions too. Three whole pizzas is 3/1 — three wholes, each counted as one. And when the top equals the bottom, you have a whole: 4/4 = 1, because all four parts together make one whole.

This helps you see numbers like 6/6 or 8/8 instantly as 1, and 5/1 as just 5.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Show 4/4, 5/5, 6/6 as fully shaded wholes — the pattern jumps out.
  • Connect "over one" to the idea of whole, uncut items.
  • Fold this into number-line work: whole numbers sit on the line too.
  • Ask for several fractions equal to 1 to cement the top=bottom idea.
Talk about it:
  • How do you write 3 as a fraction?
  • Why does 5/5 equal 1?
  • What does a fraction with 1 on the bottom mean?

Mastery looks like: They write whole numbers as fractions and identify fractions equal to 1.

Common stumbles: Thinking 4/4 is "less than one"; confusing 3/1 with 1/3.
