Civics showcase

Review and present key civics concepts from this unit -- city council, local ordinances, public services, lawmaking steps, participation, proposals, and leader letters.

This unit took you from understanding local government to actually practicing it: you learned how a city council works, spotted real local laws, traced public services back to tax dollars, ran your own mock meeting, and wrote a real proposal and letter. This week is a showcase -- a chance to explain what you learned and show the real work you produced.

Explaining an idea clearly, out loud, to another person is one of the best ways to prove you truly understand it -- it is much harder to fake than simply recognizing a term on a worksheet.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Gather the real work from this unit -- the mock meeting notes, the proposal, and the letter -- as the evidence for this showcase.
  • Have your child explain, out loud, how the unit's ideas connect, rather than just answering questions in isolation.
  • Celebrate that this unit produced real work: a real proposal, a real letter, not just worksheet answers.
  • If your family sent the week 26 letter, follow up on it together if any response arrives.
Talk about it:
  • Which part of this civics unit felt most real to you?
  • What is one thing you would tell a friend about how local government works?
  • What civics topic would you like to learn more about next?

Mastery looks like: They can explain how the unit's ideas connect (council, ordinances, services, lawmaking, participation) and present their own real proposal and letter.

Common stumbles: Recalling vocabulary terms without being able to explain how the ideas connect to each other or to their own real work.
