Small-Moment Brainstorming

Brainstorm several small, specific true moments from real life and choose one to become a story.

This unit you write a true small-moment story -- not a whole day, but one specific moment you could almost replay in your mind like a short movie clip.

This week is just brainstorming: list four or five small, specific moments from your own life. Later you will choose just one and stretch it into a full story.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Brainstorm out loud together first -- hearing a few of your own small-moment ideas can unlock your child's memory.
  • If an idea is still too big, ask "what was the ONE second or minute inside that event that stands out most?"
  • There is no wrong small moment -- ordinary ones (a favorite snack, a quiet moment with a pet) work just as well as big ones.
  • Write down all the brainstormed ideas somewhere safe, even the ones not chosen -- they could become future stories.
Talk about it:
  • Which small moment did you choose, and why?
  • What made some of your brainstormed ideas too big to be "small moments"?
  • Could you replay your chosen moment in your mind like a short movie clip?

Mastery looks like: They brainstorm several genuinely small, specific moments and choose one clear moment to develop into a story.

Common stumbles: Choosing an idea that is still really a whole event or day instead of one narrow, specific moment.
