Gather 5 Facts (Book + Ask + Look)

Gather five true facts about the research animal from three kinds of sources: a book, asking someone, and looking closely.

Real reporters check more than one source. This week you gather at least five facts using THREE ways to find information: reading a book, asking someone who might know, and looking closely at photos or real observation.

Write down each fact in your own words, and jot a tiny note about where it came from. That habit keeps your facts honest and checkable.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set aside real time for each source -- ten minutes with a book, a quick question to a family member, and a few minutes with photos or, if possible, real observation.
  • Model writing a fact "in your own words" rather than copying a sentence straight from a book.
  • Help your child jot a tiny source note (book, ask, look) next to each fact, even just one word.
  • Celebrate reaching five facts as a real research milestone -- the drafting weeks ahead depend on this list.
Talk about it:
  • Which of your three sources was easiest to use? Which was hardest?
  • What is the most surprising fact you found so far?
  • Why does writing a fact in your own words matter?

Mastery looks like: They gather at least five true facts about their animal, using a book, asking someone, and close observation, in their own words.

Common stumbles: Copying a sentence directly from a book instead of restating the fact in their own words.
