Family Debate Night

Present an opinion aloud in a friendly family debate, listen to a counter opinion, and respond respectfully with reasons.

This week your family holds a friendly debate night. You will share your opinion out loud, listen to someone else share a different one, and respond with your reasons -- calmly and respectfully.

A good debater listens all the way through before responding, and answers with a reason, not just "nuh-uh." This is the whole unit's toolkit, spoken instead of written.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Set a friendly tone from the start -- maybe with a silly gavel or a special "debate" chair -- so this feels like a game, not a conflict.
  • Model listening all the way through before responding, even when you disagree with your child.
  • Coach a respectful response ("Some people say... but I still think...") if a child gets stuck defending their opinion.
  • End on a warm note regardless of who "wins" -- the real goal is speaking and listening with reasons, not a verdict.
Talk about it:
  • What opinion did you share, and what was your reason?
  • What was the other person's opinion, and could you understand why they thought that?
  • How did it feel to respond calmly instead of just disagreeing?

Mastery looks like: They state an opinion aloud with a reason, accurately restate someone else's differing opinion, and respond calmly using a reason.

Common stumbles: Interrupting before really listening to the other opinion, or responding with a flat disagreement instead of a reason.
