Opinion + Because

State an opinion clearly using a phrase like "I think" or "In my opinion," and support it with one solid reason.

An opinion is what you believe, not something everyone would agree is true. Strong opinion writing often starts with a clear signal phrase like "I think" or "In my opinion," so the reader knows right away that a belief is coming.

A reason is real support for your opinion -- not just repeating it. "In my opinion, recess is the best part of the school day because it lets our brains rest" gives the reader a true reason to consider.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Model saying a few opinions out loud yourself using "I think" and "In my opinion," so your child hears the pattern before writing it.
  • Push gently past a repeat-reason ("because it is the best") toward one that actually explains something.
  • Accept any true, personal opinion -- there is no wrong answer for what someone believes, only a missing or present reason.
  • Keep topics playful this week (favorite flavor, favorite game) so the frame feels easy before harder topics arrive later in the unit.
Talk about it:
  • What signal phrase did you use to open your opinion?
  • Why does an opinion need a real reason instead of just a repeat?
  • What is one thing you believe, and why do you believe it?

Mastery looks like: They open with a clear signal phrase, state an opinion, and support it with one real, specific reason.

Common stumbles: Writing a reason that just restates the opinion in slightly different words, such as "because it is great."
