Garden or pot planting

Plant a real seed correctly using soil, water, and light, and explain what a seed needs in order to grow.

You have learned about seeds, pollinators, and how plants depend on animals. Now it is time to grow one yourself. A seed needs a few things to grow well: soil to anchor its roots and hold nutrients, water, light, and warmth, plus enough time to sprout and grow.

Planting is only the first step. A seed also needs ongoing care. Too much water can drown it, and too little light can leave it weak and pale, so finding the right balance matters.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Actually plant a real seed together in a cup, pot, or garden bed, letting your child do as much of the work as possible.
  • Set a simple watering routine or reminder so the plant gets consistent care, not too much or too little.
  • Choose the sunny spot together and explain why light matters for the plant's growth.
  • Start a simple check-in habit, like glancing at the pot each morning, to build the habit of real observation over time.
Talk about it:
  • What four things does your seed need to grow?
  • Where did you put your pot, and why is that a good spot?
  • What will you check for each time you look at your plant?

Mastery looks like: They plant a real seed correctly using soil, water, and light, and can state what a seed needs in order to grow.

Common stumbles: Overwatering the seed or placing the pot somewhere without enough light; forgetting that growth also takes real time, not just the right conditions.
