Reading Log and Recommendations

Keep a simple reading log of finished books and write a short, honest recommendation for one of them.

A reading log is a simple list of the books you have read, with a short note about each one. It helps you remember what you read and notice your own reading habits over time.

A recommendation tells someone else why they might enjoy a book too -- your honest opinion plus a real reason.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Start or continue a simple reading log together -- a notebook or a printed sheet both work fine.
  • Ask for a rating AND a reason every time -- the reason is the real thinking behind the rating.
  • Model writing your own recommendation for a book you have read, so your child sees the format in action.
  • Treat an honest negative opinion about a book as valid too, as long as it is explained respectfully.
Talk about it:
  • What is your favorite book from your reading log so far?
  • How do you decide on a star rating for a book?
  • What makes a recommendation convincing?

Mastery looks like: They maintain a reading log with real titles and notes, and write a genuine recommendation with a supporting reason.

Common stumbles: Giving a rating with no reason attached, which does not help anyone else decide whether to read the book.
