Or Words: Corn and Storm

Read words with the r-controlled vowel pattern or, hearing that or makes its own single sound.

Or is another r-controlled vowel, just like ar. When o is followed by r, it does not say a short or long o -- it says "or," like in for, corn, and storm.

Or shows up in a lot of everyday words. Once this sound is automatic, whole sentences full of or words get much easier to read.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Contrast a short-o word with an or word, like hot and horn, so the difference is easy to hear.
  • Point out or in words all over the kitchen table -- a fork, popcorn, a fork rest.
  • Keep last week's ar words in the mix so ar and or do not blur together.
  • Praise fast, confident reads more than perfect ones this early in the pattern.
Talk about it:
  • What sound does or make?
  • Can you find an or word in the kitchen?
  • How is horn different from hot?

Mastery looks like: They read or words with the correct "or" sound automatically and do not confuse it with ar.

Common stumbles: Mixing up the or sound with the ar sound from last week.
