Checkpoint: Fluent and Expressive Reading

Read a grade-level passage at roughly seventy words per minute with accuracy and natural expression.

This checkpoint puts fluency and expression together. You will read a passage for one timed minute, just like a few weeks ago, but now expression counts too, not just speed.

A rough target for this point in the year is about seventy words per minute, read accurately and with a voice that changes for the punctuation.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick a passage at your child's grade level that has not been memorized.
  • Count words read correctly in one timed minute, the same way as the earlier fluency check.
  • Listen for expression this time too, not just speed -- both count as fluency.
  • Keep this warm; seventy words a minute is a general target, not a strict pass-or-fail line.
Talk about it:
  • How does your reading feel different from earlier this year?
  • What are you most proud of in today's reading?
  • What punctuation mark did you handle the best today?

Mastery looks like: They read a grade-level passage at approximately seventy words per minute with accuracy and natural expression.

Common stumbles: Reading fast but choppy, with no expression, just to reach a higher word count.
