Reread for Speed and Feeling

Reread a familiar passage several times to build speed and expressive feeling that matches the meaning of the text.

Rereading is still one of the best ways to grow as a reader. Now the goal is not just going faster -- it is making your reading sound the way the story feels. Exciting parts should sound exciting, and calm parts should sound calm.

Try three reads: the first for accuracy, the second for speed, and the third for feeling, matching your voice to the mood of the page.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Choose a page your child already knows fairly well, not brand-new text.
  • Talk about what feeling the page has before the third read.
  • Model an example yourself: read the same line once flat, then once with feeling, so the difference is obvious.
  • Praise expression and feeling as much as you praise speed.
Talk about it:
  • How did your third read sound different from your first?
  • What feeling did the page have, and how did your voice show it?
  • Which page would you like to reread again tomorrow?

Mastery looks like: They reread a familiar passage with growing speed and voice expression that matches the feeling of the text.

Common stumbles: Reading faster but flatter, losing expression in the rush to go quickly.
