First Fluency Timer

Read a short passage for one timed minute to set a words-per-minute baseline, framed as a fun personal challenge rather than a test.

Today you will read with a timer for the first time this year. This is not about feeling rushed or stressed -- think of it like a personal best you get to try to beat later in the year.

Read at a natural, understandable pace, clear enough that someone listening could follow every word -- not so fast that the words blur together.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Frame this as a personal best, never a competition with anyone else.
  • Count the words read correctly in one minute and write the number down somewhere so you can compare it later in the year.
  • Do not interrupt during the timed minute, even for a mistake -- just note it quietly and keep going.
  • Keep the tone light; a stopwatch should never feel like pressure.
Talk about it:
  • How did it feel to read with a timer?
  • What would help you read more smoothly next time?
  • What is one word that was tricky today?

Mastery looks like: They read a passage for one timed minute at a natural pace and report an honest word count without stress.

Common stumbles: Rushing through words so fast that accuracy and understanding drop, just to get a bigger number.
