Ar Words: Star and Farm

Read words with the r-controlled vowel pattern ar, hearing that the r changes the vowel sound completely.

When a vowel is followed by the letter r, the r takes over and changes the vowel sound completely. It is not short and not long -- it is a whole new sound. This is called an r-controlled vowel.

Ar says "ar," like in car, star, and farm. Once you know this one new sound, you can read a huge number of new words.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Some teachers nickname this the bossy r, because it takes over and changes the vowel sound -- fun to say together.
  • Contrast a short-a word with an ar word out loud, like cap and car, so your child hears just how different the r makes it.
  • Have your child cover the r with a finger, notice the wrong short-a sound, then uncover it and hear the true ar sound.
  • Go on a quick ar hunt around the house -- a jar, a scarf, a yardstick.
Talk about it:
  • What does the r do to the vowel sound in car?
  • Can you find something ar in this room?
  • How is car different from cap?

Mastery looks like: They read ar words with the correct "ar" sound automatically, without trying to force a short or long a.

Common stumbles: Trying to read the a as short or long instead of blending it with the r into one new sound.
