Checkpoint: Two-Syllable Words Cold

Show automatic, accurate reading of two-syllable words -- closed, open, compound, and prefixed -- without hints.

Checkpoint time. This one covers everything from the last several weeks: rabbit-style words, tiger-style words, compound words, and words with un- or re-.

Read each word cold, without a hint first. If you get stuck, that tells us exactly what to review a little more before moving on.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child read each word without a hint first; step in only after a genuine attempt.
  • Notice which type of two-syllable word, if any, needed extra support so you know what to revisit.
  • Keep the tone warm and low-pressure -- checkpoints show growth, not just gaps.
  • Point out how many different kinds of two-syllable words your child can now read compared to a few weeks ago.
Talk about it:
  • Which kind of two-syllable word felt easiest today?
  • Which kind still needs more practice?
  • Can you divide a two-syllable word you have never seen before?

Mastery looks like: They read a mix of two-syllable words -- closed, open, compound, and prefixed -- accurately without hints.

Common stumbles: Splitting a two-syllable word in the wrong place and misreading the vowel sound as a result.
