Prefix Re-: Doing It Again

Read and understand words with the prefix re-, which means "again," added to the front of a base word.

Re- is another prefix, and it has one clear job: it means "again." Do becomes redo, which means do again. Read becomes reread, which means read again.

Use the same routine as un- from last week: find the base word first, then add re- to the front and ask what the new word means.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Find the base word first, then add re- to the front, the same routine as un- last week.
  • Ask for the meaning every time -- "again" is the whole idea behind this prefix.
  • Compare un- and re- side by side so the two prefixes do not blur together in your child's mind.
  • Spot a re- word together on a real page, like reread, replay, or restart.
Talk about it:
  • What does the prefix re- mean?
  • How is re- different from last week's un-?
  • Can you find a re- word in a book nearby?

Mastery looks like: They read re- words fluently and explain the "again" meaning correctly.

Common stumbles: Confusing re- with un- and giving the wrong meaning, such as "not" instead of "again."
