Write a true family story

Write or tell a true short story about something that happened to a family member, with a beginning, middle, and end.

Every family has stories that get told again and again -- like the time a grandparent got lost on a trip, or the day a pet ran away and came home. These stories are real history, even though they are small.

A good story has three parts: a beginning that sets up what is happening, a middle where something happens, and an end that tells how it turned out.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Ask a family member (yourself included) to tell your child one true, memorable story from their past.
  • Help your child identify the beginning, middle, and end out loud before they write or dictate anything.
  • Let your child write the story in their own words, or dictate it to you if writing is still slow -- the thinking matters more than the handwriting this week.
  • Read the finished story back together and celebrate it as a real piece of family history now written down.
Talk about it:
  • What true family story did you choose to write about?
  • What is the most exciting part of that story?
  • Why do you think this story is worth remembering?

Mastery looks like: They can tell or write a true family story with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Common stumbles: Leaving out the middle (the part where something actually happens) or turning a true story into an invented one.
