Community services tour

Identify community services that are shared by everyone, such as fire, police, libraries, and schools.

A community service is something a whole community shares and uses together, instead of everyone buying their own separately. Firefighters, police officers, public libraries, and public schools are all community services.

Community services are usually there for everyone, whether or not you personally use them every day. Even if your house never catches fire, the fire department is there and ready, for you and for your whole community.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Visit or drive past a real community service this week -- a fire station, library, or school -- and talk about who it serves.
  • Ask "who pays for this?" and "who gets to use it?" for each service you discuss.
  • List 3-4 community services together and what each one does for the community.
  • Point out that community services are one reason people choose to live together in towns and cities -- sharing certain things works better together.
Talk about it:
  • What community services have you used yourself?
  • Why do communities share services like fire departments instead of each family having their own?
  • What is one community service you are especially thankful for?

Mastery looks like: They can name several real community services and explain that they are shared by and available to everyone in the community.

Common stumbles: Thinking a service only "counts" if they personally use it often, instead of understanding it is shared and available to all.
