Hold a family election

Plan and run a real or pretend family election, including candidates, ballots, and counting votes.

An election is a bigger kind of vote where people choose a PERSON (a candidate) for a job, instead of choosing between two foods or activities. This week, your family holds its own election.

A real election has several steps: candidates are named, each voter gets a ballot (a paper or way to mark their choice), votes are collected, and then someone counts them carefully to find the winner.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick a fun, low-stakes "job" to elect someone for -- family movie picker, dinner planner, or game-night host for the week.
  • Help your child make simple paper ballots listing each candidate.
  • Let each family member vote privately, then count the ballots together out loud.
  • Announce the winner using "majority" or "most votes," and let the winner take on their new job for real.
Talk about it:
  • What job did your family hold an election for?
  • How did you count the ballots to find the winner?
  • What was fair about how the election was run?

Mastery looks like: They can help plan and run a simple election with candidates, ballots, and a careful vote count.

Common stumbles: Not keeping ballots private and fair, or losing track while counting votes.
