Map-skills challenge

Apply compass directions, grid locations, map keys, and routes together to complete a map-skills challenge.

This week is a review challenge. You will use everything from this unit -- compass rose, grid, map key, and routes -- in one activity, the way a real explorer or mapmaker would use all their skills together.

Mixing skills together is harder than practicing just one at a time, but it is also how map skills work in real life: nobody uses just a compass OR just a grid -- they use whatever the map gives them.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use a map from this unit (a real one, or the original one your child made in week 17) to create 4-5 challenge clues mixing directions, grid locations, keys, and routes.
  • Read each clue out loud and time or cheer your child on as they solve it on the map.
  • If a clue trips them up, name which specific skill (grid, key, direction, or route) needs another look.
  • Celebrate finishing the whole challenge as a real map-skills milestone for the year.
Talk about it:
  • Which map skill do you feel most confident about now?
  • Which map skill do you want more practice with?
  • What was the trickiest challenge clue?

Mastery looks like: They can combine compass directions, grid locations, and map keys together to solve a multi-step map challenge.

Common stumbles: Using only one map skill at a time instead of combining them, or skipping the key when a symbol is unfamiliar.
