Continents and oceans

Name and locate the seven continents and the major oceans on a world map.

The world is made of huge landmasses called continents, and huge bodies of water called oceans. There are seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

Between the continents are oceans, including the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. Learning them in a rhyme, song, or chant is a great way to make the names stick.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Look at a world map or globe together and trace the outline of each continent with a finger while naming it.
  • Make up a simple chant or tune for the seven continents, or find one to sing together -- repetition is what makes it stick.
  • Point out the oceans between the continents and name each one as you point.
  • Play a simple pointing game: call out a continent or ocean and race to point at it on the map.
Talk about it:
  • Which continent do we live on?
  • Which ocean is closest to us?
  • Which continent would you most like to visit, and why?

Mastery looks like: They can name all seven continents and point to the continent and nearest ocean where they live on a world map.

Common stumbles: Confusing North America and South America, or mixing up an ocean's name with a continent's name.
