My timeline: birth to now

Place important events of your own life in the order they happened, using a timeline.

A timeline is a line that shows events in the order they happened. The earliest event goes on the left. The most recent event goes on the right. Historians use timelines to keep track of what happened first, second, and last.

Your life has a timeline too! It starts the day you were born and stretches all the way to today. Between then and now, lots of things happened: you learned to walk, you lost a tooth, you started school. Each one is a point on your own timeline.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Help your child list five to seven real events from their life: birth, walking, talking, a tooth, starting school, a trip, a sibling arriving -- whatever is true and memorable.
  • Draw a long line on paper together and mark each event in order, left to right, with a short label under each mark.
  • Ask "what happened before that?" and "what happened after that?" to check the order makes sense.
  • Leave room at the right end of the timeline for events that have not happened yet -- their timeline keeps growing.
Talk about it:
  • What is the very first event on your timeline?
  • What event on your timeline are you most proud of?
  • Why does the order of events matter on a timeline?

Mastery looks like: They can list several real events from their own life and place them in the correct order on a simple timeline.

Common stumbles: Putting events in a random order instead of the order they actually happened, or forgetting that "born" always comes first.
