Systems thinking: inputs, outputs, and feedback loops — Homework

For each feedback question, state whether it is positive (amplifying) or negative (stabilizing) and explain why in one sentence.

  1. 1.A house's air conditioner shuts off once the room reaches the temperature on the thermostat. Classify this feedback.
  2. 2.A wildfire dries out nearby vegetation with its heat, making that vegetation more likely to catch fire too, spreading the blaze further. Classify this feedback.
  3. 3.Melting permafrost releases stored methane, which traps more heat and causes more permafrost to melt. Classify this feedback.
  4. 4.In a predator-prey system, prey numbers fall when predators are abundant, which then causes predator numbers to fall from lack of food, which lets prey recover. Classify this feedback.
  5. 5.Diagram, in words, one input-output system from your own home (water, energy, or food), naming at least one stock and one flow.
