The dot product: angle between vectors and projections — Homework

Compute the dot product first, then decide whether you need an angle, an orthogonality check, or a projection.

  1. 1.Find the dot product of u=<2,5> and v=<-5,2>, and state what it tells you.
  2. 2.Find the angle between u=<1,0> and v=<1,sqrt(3)>.
  3. 3.Find the projection of v=<5,0> onto u=<3,4>.
  4. 4.Two forces, 60 N due east and 90 N due north, act on an object at the same time. Find the magnitude and direction (angle from the 60 N force) of the resultant force.
  5. 5.Explain why a vector projection is always a scalar multiple of the vector you are projecting onto.
