Composition of functions — Homework

Work inside-out to build each composite, then check the domain in two separate steps.

  1. 1.Let f(x)=4x+1 and g(x)=x-3. Find (f o g)(x).
  2. 2.Using the same f and g, find (g o f)(x).
  3. 3.Let f(x)=sqrt(x) and g(x)=x+9. Find (f o g)(x) and state its domain.
  4. 4.Let f(x)=1/(x+1) and g(x)=sqrt(x). Find (f o g)(x) and state its domain (check both functions).
  5. 5.Explain, using the previous problem, why it still matters to check the outer function's restriction even when it ends up excluding nothing new.
