Every poll carries a margin of error (often around plus-or-minus 3 percentage points for a national poll), reflecting the built-in uncertainty of sampling rather than surveying literally everyone. Sample SIZE matters far less than sample QUALITY: a poll of ten million self-selected online respondents can be far less accurate than a poll of one thousand carefully, randomly selected people, because self-selected samples suffer from selection bias, meaning the people who choose to respond may differ systematically from the population as a whole.
The classic cautionary tale is the 1936 Literary Digest poll, which surveyed about 2.4 million people (a huge sample) drawn largely from telephone directories and automobile registration lists -- during the Great Depression, those lists skewed heavily toward wealthier Americans. The poll confidently predicted Alf Landon would defeat Franklin Roosevelt; Roosevelt won in a landslide. That same year, George Gallup used a much smaller but genuinely random and representative sample and correctly predicted Roosevelt's win, launching modern scientific polling. The media plays several roles in a democracy: informing citizens, setting the political "agenda" by choosing which stories to cover prominently, and acting as a watchdog over government power. Whether the media, taken as a whole, shows systematic political bias is itself a long-running and genuinely disputed question -- critics on both the political left and right have pointed to studies of story selection, sourcing, or framing they believe show bias in different directions, while other researchers argue that perceived bias partly reflects each audience's own starting assumptions, and that outright factual inaccuracy is different from a debatable editorial choice about which stories matter most. Reasonable, well-informed people disagree about how serious media bias is and in which direction it runs; this lesson does not settle that question, and neither, honestly, does the research.
