Free Fall — Homework
Use g = 9.8 m/s^2 and show which free-fall formula you are using for each part.
- 1.A stone is dropped from rest and falls for 5 s before hitting the water below. Find the distance it fell and its impact speed.
- 2.A ball is thrown straight up at 29.4 m/s. Find (a) the time to reach maximum height and (b) the maximum height.
- 3.A flowerpot falls from a balcony 4.9 m above the sidewalk, starting from rest. Find the time it takes to hit the ground and its speed at impact.
- 4.A ball thrown straight up returns to its starting height with the same speed it started with, just directed downward. Use free-fall symmetry to explain why this must be true.
- 5.At the exact top of a ball's path, is its acceleration also zero? Explain.
- 6.Explain why a heavier ball and a lighter ball, dropped from the same height at the same time (ignoring air resistance), hit the ground simultaneously.
