Position, Displacement, and Velocity — Homework
State clearly whether each answer asks for distance/speed (always positive) or displacement/velocity (can be zero or negative).
- 1.A cyclist rides from x=0 to x=150 m in 30 s, then continues to x=250 m over the next 20 s (same direction). Find the total displacement and average velocity for the full 50 s trip.
- 2.A swimmer swims 50 m down a pool and 50 m back (100 m total distance) in 80 s. Find the average speed and average velocity.
- 3.An object's position is x=-20 m at t=0 and x=30 m at t=10 s. Find its displacement and average velocity.
- 4.Two runners each finish a 400 m race that starts and ends at the exact same point (one full lap) in 80 s. Find their average speed and average velocity, and explain the difference.
- 5.Describe what a position-time graph looks like for an object moving at a constant NEGATIVE velocity.
- 6.Describe a real trip you might take (driving to a store and back, or a similar round trip) and estimate its distance versus its displacement.
