Electromagnetic Induction — Homework
Confirm that flux is actually changing before expecting any induced EMF.
- 1.A 50-turn coil with an area of 0.1 m^2 sits in a field that rises from 0.4 T to 1.0 T over 0.5 s. Find the induced EMF.
- 2.Using the same field change and time as above, find the EMF if the coil had only 25 turns instead of 50.
- 3.Explain, using Lenz's law, why a dropped magnet falls noticeably slower through a copper or aluminum tube than through a plastic tube of the same size.
- 4.Explain why induction requires relative motion or change between a magnet and a coil -- what happens if both move together at the same speed with no relative change?
- 5.Describe a real device that uses electromagnetic induction (a generator, a hand-crank flashlight, a wireless phone charger, an induction stovetop) and explain, in general terms, what is changing to induce the current.
