Refraction and Lenses — Homework
Identify whether each problem is about refraction (Snell's law) or about image formation (the lens equation) before starting.
- 1.Light travels from air (n=1.00) into glass (n=1.50) at an angle of incidence of 40 degrees. Find the angle of refraction.
- 2.An object sits 15 cm from a converging lens with a focal length of 10 cm. Find the image distance and magnification.
- 3.A light ray traveling through glass hits the boundary back into air at a steep enough angle that no refracted ray emerges at all -- name this phenomenon and explain why it can only happen going from a denser into a less dense medium.
- 4.Explain why a converging lens and a diverging lens produce fundamentally different kinds of images (real versus virtual) for an object farther away than the focal length.
- 5.Describe a real optical device (eyeglasses, a camera, a magnifying glass) and explain whether it primarily uses a converging or diverging lens and why.
